My aunt used to say, ‘Anyone can always lose 10 lbs.’ Well anyone but me, lol! I always wanted to quickly snap my fingers and lose weight. It just wouldn’t work. It took me many, many years to understand that weight management and success depends on my daily routine and sticking to it. After having children and turning 40 my metabolism really changed. It seemed that anything I ate really stuck to my body. It took many fad diets and elimination food diets to understand what foods really were working with my body and foods that were not.

I started off the diet fad getting into Slim Fast in the 80’s, the Thigh Master and Weight Watchers in the 90’s, and in the 21st century I’ve tried to count calories but it really wasn’t working for me. I would tend to binge on days off and was super strict and then super flagrant. It wasn’t a good pendulum and I needed to even out my moods by honing into my daily intake.

Lord knows that being consistent always was tricky for me, mainly because I loved ALL THE CARBS! Toasted sesame bread, sourdough bread toasted with butter, pasta with parmigiana – OH BOY. I really loved to binge on pasta and especially when I was having a hard day and really in need of comfort food. In other words, every birthday I have I also have a cheat day! And if it’s your birthday today…

When I turned 38 I really saw that nothing was working for me. I tried everything. I was at rock bottom. Then I found Busy Phillips on Instagram promoting the Whole30 diet. I watched her go from a little thick to long and thin. I saw her sacrifice complex carbs and dairy. I was impressed by her commitment and really needed to give it a shot.

After many tries of convincing myself I could keep on the same route of being overweight and tired, I finally succumbed to my addiction and tried the Whole30 diet. It worked wonders! I realized that I was really allergic to sugar, dairy and bread. My body couldn’t process it the way it used to when I was a teenager.

This fall was very different than many others as the pressure and stress of COVID and the pandemic had me attending a lot of parties and events unexpectedly. We went to friends houses and I would overeat. I went to a wedding and I binged on cake. That’s OKAY sometimes. It’s okay to cheat once in a while, but now back to reality.
