This January Wolf Moon is full tonight and will bring us a sense of recovery and renewal to get us started for this auspicious new year.

The Full Wolf Moon is a time for light to conquer over darkness, a time to reflect on our achievements to date, and a time to plan for the rest of the year by setting goals that are both attainable and far off to see how we pan out.

Here are five additional facts about the Full Wolf Moon tonight:

  1. It is not only called the Wolf Moon because the wolves are heard howling when they are hungry and need to communicate with each other. It is also known as the Old Moon, Ice Moon, Snow Moon, and the Moon after Yule.  The Old Farmers Almanac notes that another fitting name for this full Moon is the Center Moon. Used by the Assiniboine people, it refers to the idea that this Moon roughly marks the middle of the winter season. Other traditional names for the January Moon emphasize the harsh coldness of the season: Cold Moon (Cree), Frost Exploding Moon (Cree), Freeze Up Moon (Algonquin), Severe Moon (Dakota), and Hard Moon (Dakota). 
  2. The Sun notes that the full wolf moon will reside directly across from the sun at a 180 degree angle.
  3. The Weather Network notes that many of the Full Moon names are simplifications or translations of names from First Nations peoples, such as the Sioux (Wolves Run Together), the Assiniboine (Center Moon), the Cherokee (Cold Moon), the Abenaki (Greetings Maker Moon), the Lakota (Hard Moon), the Shawnee (Severe Moon), and the Chippewa & Ojibwe (Great Spirits Moon).
  4. Space notes that the full wolf moon will be in the constellation Cancer, and rises just a few minutes before sunset.
