Starting this off by saying no man is perfect. We all have our flaws. We all make mistakes. When we commit to marriage we commit to being one.
Marriage is a union arranged by God. The Bible says let no man break it. Matthew 19:4-6 notes in regards to married folks that they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 notes that two are better than one, because they have good reward for their toil. The Bible verse goes on to say, For if they fail, one will lift up his fellow. But woe is him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up.
Here are 10 Ways to Have a Long Lasting Marriage:
UNCONDITIONAL SUPPORT
Support is looked at here and when there is trouble the other should support one another when they fall. It also talks about the need to be first should not be the priority, rather instead of competing against each other you should support one another to be their best in the name of God.
LEAVING YOUR MOTHER AND FATHER, AND BECOMING ONE WITH YOUR WIFE
Genesis scriptures talk to the importance of leaving your mother and father as the man or woman embarks on the new journey of marriage. Genesis 2:24 notes, Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
HONOR YOUR MARRIAGE BY STAYING FAITHFUL
It is important to stay faithful to each other and not commit adultery. Corinthians notes But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
ACCEPTING HIGHS AND LOWS OF LIFE, AND RIDING THE WAVES
S@$% happens. We lose our jobs. We lose a friend. We are being mistreated at work. We are taken for granted. All of these are natural ebbs and flows of life, and cannot be avoided. Go easy on your significant other in times of trouble, listen and support them. Do not deny their pain. Their pain is theirs and they are allowed to be in pain. Support them through the good and bad and respect their process. Ask how you can help and commit to helping them back up. We all have setbacks, but let’s not make them permanent.
DO NOT BE AFRAID
Fear is not of God, as he wants us to trust in His Plan for us. Do not fear, but have faith in the Lord that he has a special plan for you.
STAY HEALTHY
Taking care of your mind, body and soul is important. This is a responsibility of your marriage to take care of yourself.
LOVE + RESPECT YOURSELF
Cherish yourself. We are all here on a temporary term, and will never get this time back. All we have is this present moment, and have the ability to do the next right thing.
ALWAYS BE IMPROVING + LEARNING
Challenge yourself, and do what you love.
RESPECT BOUNDARIES
Know when it is time to stop, and know when it is time to go. Know when it is time to work, and know when it is time to play. Honor your spouse by honoring their feelings. They don’t want you to solve their problems, they want you to listen and validate their feelings.
CREATE A WRITTEN SCHEDULE OF RESPONSIBILTIES
Mutually agree and delegate what needs to be accomplished on a weekly basis. This will give both parties the ability to delegate accordingly, and expectations of both parties are set.
