10 Benefits of Baking Soda

I was wondering where baking soda came from this morning.  Do you happen to know?  Turns out it has nothing to do with Coca Cola or Sprite, AND is not just only used for baking!

So I did some research this morning and it seems that we are making baking soda right here in the good ‘ole US of A, yielding directly from the Buffalo state of Wyoming (also the first state that allowed women to vote in case you were wondering)!  Wyoming is known for having a big population of American bison. Depending on who you talk with, the word “Wyoming” in Delaware Indian language means either “large plains” or “mountains and valleys alternating;” in Munsee language “at the big river flat;” or in Algonquin “a large prairie place,” see this and more about Wyoming here!

pexels-photo-533858.jpeg

Anyhow back to baking soda, basically per Google it is mined from the Green River from trona ore which is a mineral.   The trona ore is baked until it becomes soda ash, where from there is treated with carbon dioxide.  From there yields baking soda!  So odd, right?  I never knew and have been using baking soda for over 30 years!  How weird!

That being said I have used baking soda in a variety of different ways other than baking that I wanted to share to help keep you and your family at your best health!  See my list below!

1. A Cleaning Scrub

More lately I have been concerned with the ammonia and bleach based products that I used to use when cleaning my kitchen, bathroom and shower.  I have younger children and want to be sure that they are not exposed to any poisons at all to not have an effect on their skin, body and overall health.  Let them get to that in college!  In the meantime, more recently I have been using baking soda to clean my bathtub.  With 4 people in my family, we have a lot of in and out of the shower and bath and by the end of the week it gets dirty fast.  I likely wet the bath tub by turning the shower on for a few seconds, the wait another few seconds and sprinkle some in the bathtub.  I then use the Magic Eraser scrubbing sponges that disintegrate as you use it.  I really have seen a big difference in the tub as it gets it very clean, and white – making it shine for the week ahead!

2. A Facial Scrub

I heard the best thing to do in your 30’s for your skin is exfoliate!  I get that as I see that my skin is thicker than it was in my 20’s, so I want to be sure I literally put my best face forward.  Along with the Burt’s Bees Skin Nourishment Gentle Foam Cleanser that I use on a daily basis, I once or twice a week mix in some baking soda with it which helps as an exfoliate and really brightens it up!  I also suffered with acne when I was younger, so some of the scars still remain.  This helps as a mild abrasive agent to help make the scarring not appear as bad too.  Also much cheaper than a professional microdermabrasion session!

3. As an Anti-acid for stomach pain or indigestion

We love spicy fried foods here!  There I admitted it!  Problem is that a few hours later I typically feel a little crumby with a stomach ache.  When you look at the ingredients in Alka Seltzer or other brands you will see that baking soda is actually one of the main ingredients!  You can put a half a teaspoon in some warm water, mix it up, then VOILA, a nice soothing drink to settle your stomach and help with the sometimes painful indigestion we can get from spicy or fried foods.

4.  As a Wall Cleaner

Guys, my kids found the Sharpie and friggin’ drew all over the walls in a minutes time while I was on the phone the other day!  What a bummer!  Good news is that they are white walls so I was able to surprisingly get it all off with the Magic Eraser Sponges and the baking soda I originally am talking about here!  We were really able to get a nice handle on the drawings and although not perfect, still looks way better than it did before and we can have guests over again!

pexels-photo-121734.jpeg

5. As a Teeth Whitener

When I found this little diddy out I was so happy!  I used to spend a ton of money on the Crest Whitening Strips at the store, and found out that by placing some baking soda on your finger and letting it sit on your teeth overnight gets your teeth nice bright and white again!  Give it a try, you will really like it!

pexels-photo-91227.jpeg

6.  A Silver Polisher

If you guys have a ton of old silver in the house, chances are they have been sitting in a hidden place for sometime, getting minimal love!  Merp!  Time to use baking soda to polish it up as a ‘I am really bored’ weekend project.

7.  A Carpet Cleaner

Another bummer is that my children love eating Nutella by the spoonful!  Issue is that sometimes it will fall on the white carpet, which it is such a bummer!   Great news is that a mixture of baking soda, salt and warm water, along with a little elbow grease goes a really long way!  It is a great way to keep your carpet bright in between cleanings, and we typically get them cleaned once or twice a year depending on how dirty they get!  After the mixture dries, you can vacuum over it and you should see a much whiter carpet!

8. A Bug Bite and 9. Sunburn Remedy

There are so many weird bug bites and sun burns that I remember getting when being younger.  One time I even stepped on a bee!  Ouch!  Good news is that baking soda can be applied directly to a bug bit or in a warm bath as a sunburn remedy when you forget to put on that SPF 50 sunscreen!

10. A Baking must-have

SO MANY ways to use baking soda, now that you are done cleaning your house and face, time to use baking soda for your weekend Chocolate Chip Cookies!   Recipe here, and enjoy!

2018 Super Bowl 52 – Fun Facts

With the Lombardi trophy up for grabs for tomorrow’s Super Bowl LII, or 52 for those who forgot the fancy roman numerals, the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles will fight for the title tomorrow at 3:30pm PST // 6:30pm PST on NBC, which is channel 4 in NY and CA.

trophy

None other than the triple threat, Justin Timberlake himself, is leading the Half Time Show. Also Kelly Clarkson will perform during the Pre Game Show.  It will be played in the U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, MN, and the current temperature is 14 degrees fahrenheit and cloudy.  Tomorrow is supposed to be 6 degree fahrenheit and sunny, which can be blinding the the players but they should be somewhat used to these cold conditions.  It could go down to 3 below zero during the day too, hopefully the players are bundled up and warmed up before they get on the field.  No snow or precipitation in general is in the books which is good, but still cold.

cold.jpg

Turns out the Eagles and the Patriots have faced off in the Super Bowl before, where the Patriots won.  Pay back time for the Eagles tomorrow!  All together the Patriots have won five championships, but have been in it 10 times, losing five times. 8 of these appearances happened while Bill Belichick was the coach.  Seems he along with his star quarterback Tom Brady, will try to defeat the Eagles with flying colors.  The head coach for the Eagles is Doug Pederson, and their star quarterback is Carson Wentz is out with a torn ACL, so Nick Foles will be the second up to star and defeat the Patriots if he is focused and determined to win.

evaluate-and-focus-your-lead-nurturing-strategies-using-lead-liaison.jpg

Turns out the football team with the most Super Bowl wins is the Pittsburgh Steelers.  After is the New England Patriots, the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers.  Tom Brady has been in the Super Bowl as quarter back 6 times, followed by Jon Elway.  Tom Brady also has the most SuperBowl rings.  He is also married to the famous super model Gisele, and they live in NYC together and seem super happy together, sorry ladies!

Have a great time watching the game and let me know if you are eating and drinking anything fun!  I think we may end up ordering wings and pizza from Papa John’s, because Mama don’t want to cook! 🙂

Peace out y’all!

SAG Awards 2018 – Family Night

The Screen Actors Guild, also known as the SAG, is hosting their 24th Annual Awards Show tonight, where actors celebrate each other’s performances in television and film!  This is like the SuperBowl for Actors, and I am excited to see the nominees and fashion.  Also Kristen Bell is a hilarious comedian so I think she will add some fun flavor to the event.  Seems they have never had a Master of Ceremonies before and she was blessed with the honor of hosting it.

pexels-photo-285171.jpeg

I was not too familiar with what the SAG was or did until my husband decided to get into the acting business.  The SAG as a union and organization itself represents the best interests of actors, helping to protect them for fair pay, benefits, and fair working conditions.  It was a union created to protect the exploitation of the actor, and was founded in 1933 to help give fair working conditions to the people and support of the acting business.  This award show is typically a precursor to the Academy Awards that will be happening later on this year, and history shows that the winners here are more likely to go on to win at the Academy Awards too.

pexels-photo-668296.jpeg

I was wondering where we would watch the show, and it seems after looking around on my TV Guide here that you can see the SAG Awards tonight on both TNT and TBS at 5pm PST.  E! Online is also filming the red carpet live so we can check out all the pretty dresses and fashionable sleek suits.  My husband is an actor, so we are excited to watch!

plant-prize-shelves-74942.jpeg

We heard they are giving out a total of 13 awards tonight, and with the federal government shut down and protests country wide, it is bound to be politically charged.

pexels-photo-66134.jpeg

I admit I have not seen all the series and films that are being honored today, but heard from E! News that they include the following:

  • Big Little Lies
  • The Big Sick
  • Get Out
  • Lady Bird
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
  • Roman J. Israel, Esq.
  • Feud: Bette & Joan
  • Stranger Things
  • Game of Thrones
  • Black-ish
  • VEEP
  • Glow
  • Ozark
  • Better Call Saul
  • House of Cards
  • Master of None
  • Sherlock

I also tried to find more information at the SAGAwards.org website, but looks like their server is having trouble processing all the request.  Time for an upgrade SAG! 🙂

Hope you enjoy the show!

Home Remedies for Cold Relief

pexels-photo-789303.jpeg

It’s that time of year! Cold Season 2018! My entire family has been sick this weekend with colds and it has been pretty brutal. Both of my boys have red underneath their nose due to the constant nose blowing that has been going on and it makes for a very cranky household all in all.

Below are some things we have been doing for quick relief and hopefully a potential cure so we can start the work and school week off right.

1) Disinfect your home.

clean

I have been cleaning and disinfecting the major living areas since our colds started. This will help to not spread it from person to person in the house. I used Lysol with bleach to disinfect the bathroom, kitchen floor, doorknobs, handle to the refrigerator so that the virus is not spread and contained as much as possible.

2) Change your bedding, including comforter, sheets and pillow cases.

sheets.jpeg

During the night I saw that my children were sneezing and drooling, awesome combo I know! I want to be sure that there is new bedding replaced daily until the cold subsides so it does not get in the way of recovery.

3) Take baths and showers.

bath

Steam is a wonderful way to break up any bad mucus in the body, and is also a great way to rid yourself of any cold symptoms you may be having. For some reason my legs were super sore, so I decided to take a warm bath and it really helped. Also, my children have been taking many baths as well to break up the snot in their nose to help drain it.

4) Stay hydrated, drink plenty of fluids.

fluids.jpeg

My throat is starting to hurt on the third day now, and I have read that it is very important to stay hydrated and drink plenty of water. I have also been drinking Lipton tea with a little bit of coconut almond milk and it has helped give me energy.

5) Warm steam compress on face.

steam.jpg

I remember my mother running a small wash cloth under the hot water in the sink, wringing it out of the water and giving it to us to put over our face until it got cold. You don’t have to wait until it gets cold but I would definitely recommend giving this a shot if you don’t feel like getting into a bath to get the steam to help loosen up the mucus in your body from the cold.

6) Vitamins.

vitamins.jpeg

I am currently admittedly not taking any vitamins, and I heard with a virus there is really no stopping the cold and that it has to just run it’s course. However, my kids have taken their vitamins during this cold more consistently and I have seen improvement.

7) Eat fruit.

fruit.jpeg

Try to eat some fruits to help give you some energy if you are a little head foggy.  I have had a bunch of grapes and apples handy to help kick this cold.

8) Get rest.

sleep.jpeg

Sorry, this is a hard one if you are always on the go. You need to rest. I would avoid anything strenuous like heavy workouts, going outside in the cold for prolonged periods of time and stress. If you can meditate, put on some nice music, like rain, waves crashing from the ocean, birds, anything that will help you heal that would be helpful for your recovery.  Stay in bed if you can, and try to get a little fresh air if you can by cracking a window.

Consult your physician if you are not feeling well just in case it is a bacterial infection that may need antibiotics. We have not seen the doctor yet as we do not have fevers, so trying to let the virus run it’s course.

If you are sick too, hope these tips help you!

Enjoy the day!

Top Netflix Mystery Series in 2017

It is no secret that post parenting, I enjoy binge watching mysteries on Netflix.  I have to say I am so impressed with the quality of international shows on it, that I am proud to share the top Netflix mysteries and detective stories I watched last year that I know you will love!

Some of them I ended up binge watching, which was not the best idea in hindsight, however they were so captivating it felt like I couldn’t stop!

Here we go:

1.) The Killing

This is a fantastic investigation on several murders that are connected, where homicide detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) investigate to find out the truth.  I literally watched the entire first season in a 12 hour span, back to back, as the cliffhangers were really intense!  Apparently this show was on AMC for some time but was cancelled most likely to poor viewership, however, Netflix did right on picking up this gem as it was golden!  This involves a murdered teenager, the police themselves become suspects, and dirty politics in the police force and the mayor all seem to connect.  It gets pretty bloody at times, so I would keep a big blanket handy nearby so you can jump under it during the scary parts. I will let you do the honors of watching it as it is really one of the best series I have seen in a long time.

killing

2.) BroadChurch

This one is super scary, especially in the beginning, and focuses on a murder of a small boy that is set up to look like he jumped off a cliff.  No spoiler alert here, however there are red flags everywhere in this small water town and everyone seems like they have bloods on their hands.  The actor pair here were especially superb, and the mystery of it all was really engaging, would highly recommend it.  David Tennant & Olivia Colman where an excellent team, as an unconventional pair of detective partners that went above and beyond in bringing to light the truth.  A great weekend warrior series I highly recommend catching!

David-Tennant-and-Olivia-Coleman-in-Broadchurch

3.) Wanted

This one was a stellar empowering series, that basically gets two bystanders in for the ride of their life, while they witness first hand a dirty cops handiwork, while simultaneously getting kidnapped by their crew.  This becomes a tale of survival but also a tale of lies and deceit from the police department and how bystanders can become wanted criminals in action.  This was solid, gets a little cheesy here and there, but definitely worth the watch! The series connects two complete strangers, Lola and Chelsea, who see a fatal carjacking while at a bus stop.  The actors Rebecca Gibney (Lola) and Geraldine Hakewell (Chelsea) are suberb. Strangers become bestest of friends throughout the series, which is a cool path to follow as you watch.

download.jpeg

4.) The Five

A boy named Jesse, who went missing over 20 years ago, finds his case at the forefront of a current investigation where his DNA is found at a crime scene and the detectives are stumped.  This goes into the personal faults of all the characters as everyone is a suspect, but no one can pinpoint the solution to the case, until one detective gets a good lead.  Would highly recommend this for your weekday watching as you can watch each episode and take a breather.  Sara Solemani (Pru) really does a great job as the lead heroine, so I would definitely give it a shot!

the-five-lead.png

5.) Paranoid

A female General Practitioner or MD is murdered in broad daylight on a playground with her child and all hell breaks loose.  Detectives try to find out if this was a random act of a crazy man or a deliberated kill to hide medicinal secrets from the public.  A definite must watch this year if you missed it last!

Time to get your favorite back of popcorn ready, along with a nice cold glass of Coke with ice, you are in for some good Netflixing! 🙂

A Day at Santa Monica’s Clover Park

Another day off on vacation means finding another activity with the kids!

We decided to roam around the Santa Monica area today and found ourselves close to the Santa Monica Airport!  Since my boys love airplanes I was going to sit near the tarmac to see them take off and land, but ran across a HUGE park called Clover Park.

clover

Park Name: Clover Park at the Santa Monica Airport

Address: 2600 Ocean Boulevard, Santa Monica, CA 90405

Website: http://www.santamonica.com/what-to-do/clover-park/

There are many great things about this park!  First off, the parent vibe was super cool.  At times you find parks where the parents are perpetually pissed and this was nice as it seemed most of the people were pretty happy.

It had a watch tower, and of course it had a wrap around staircase all the way up to the top!  The top was enclosed for kids safety and the kids loved it.  They went up and down and up and down, also other bigger kids were going up and down it too so they had that interaction as well.  My kids were calling it a castle which was hilarious and everyone loved it.  Everyone also loves twins and so it is nice too to get a warm reception from others.

airport tower

The boys were running back and forth from the tower to the playground nearby which was also awesome.  Again minimal helicopter parents at this park which was nice.

park

All photos were courtesy of Yelp.com as we left our phones in the car during the visit. Funny and also scary, we left the car running by accident (key less car entry port) so by the time we got back the car was still running and no one stole anything which was nice.

Other great qualities of the park include:

  • A tire swing under sand
  • A few sets of 2 safe swings
  • A drawbridge which is safe for kids to cross and helps motor skills
  • A seesaw under sand too, which is great as one boy fell off and he was just fine
  • Easy accessible and clean restrooms
  • No homeless people around
  • Water fountains
  • Basketball court
  • Expansive lawn to play soccer and football
  • Airplanes in sight taking off and landing which the kids loved

Overall a good trip, no major accidents and everyone had a good time.  I would say to make sure to bring hat, water, sunglasses as parts can be super sunny, but otherwise good times.

We also started potty training them and had them pee before they went, with no drinking in the car.  They did just fine without diapers which was great.  We did start the potty training and have had some accidents, however I think we should be able to get them fully trained by the end of the month!  Fingers crossed.

A Day at Malibu Beach with the Kids

Today we took a ride down the Pacific Coast Highway, also known as the PCH or the California 1 Highway.  It is known to be one of the bucket list things to do, and the views of the Pacific Ocean, mountains, cliffs and beaches are really spectacular!

It is really nice being in California during the winter time as it really stays above 40 degrees fahrenheit, even through the peak of winter.  The most you really need is a reliable North Face zipper up jacket, not even the puffy kind just the regular jacket!  This is great especially since the boys are young enough still where I am dressing them and don’t need to get them in snow pants, boots and jackets before they go and run outside.  On the northeastern part of the United States, it can get super cold so entertainong kids indoors can be tough.

Anywho, below are a few videos from today, just building sandcastles, chasing waves and having some good family time together while I have off work.

If you are planning to take a beach trip with toddlers, I would recommend you bring the following:

  • Sunscreen over SPF 50 and kid friendly
  • Hats
  • Sunglasses
  • Water
  • Snacks, like chips or grapes in tupperware
  • Sandcastle tools
  • Sand bucket
  • Beach bag
  • Towel
  • Extra shorts and shirt just in case your child gets wet

As you can see even on the beach my toddler boys are a bit rambunctious however they are also very sweet boys and really love and admire mom and dad, for now anyway! 😃

It is always nice to see the ocean waves rolling in, you really get a refreshing and relaxing vibe when on the beach.

A few more glory beach moments for you as we ran to and from the waves.  We didn’t see any dolphins, whales or sharks this time around, but I will try to catch some footage next time we are out and about.

Have you driven the PCH yet?  Any plans on doing so at some point as a bucket list event?

10 Best Weekend Spots with Toddlers in Los Angeles

Oh the joys of parenthood!  There are times where you are just exhausted and want to stay home with the kids all day, then there are those days where you really need to get out!  We have two younger boys toddler age and we always find it tough to find places that are kid friendly, and safe for the little ones.  We have been in Los Angeles for a little over a year now and have found many different places to go with kids that are really great and entertaining for all.  Hope you can visit all this year, and let us know what you think!

This park is enclosed for the most part, except for the entrance, so very nice for speedy fast toddlers!  It has a little fountain with water that the kids can touch and play with, super zen and very beautiful.  It has a playground with a slide, mainly for smaller children though.  It comes with a waterfall on the side and bathrooms are accessible during the day, and are very clean.  My boys love it and sometimes other children leave their toys behind so if you forget to bring them it’s no big deal!

The park here has it all, a community center, tennis courts, practive walls, basketball court, volleyball, benches and views of the city.  Many bring extracurricular items like soccer balls, soccer goals, lawn bowling, bocce ball, baseball bats, gloves and balls, and anything sports related that will get your little one active and running around.

You are going to love this park!  Pretty enclosed and family friendly, there are art classes your children can take, where they can paint and have a ball!  They also can run around the prehistoric mammals in tar pits to get a little history, and can play with the outdoor statues too!  Bathrooms are accessible and clean, and many times local schools will do field trips here, so filled with children and lots of fun.  They have vending machines near the bathrooms if you need a drink and a café as well that gives you access to food + drink for all.  The museums itself are kid friendly but I would recommend a stroller if you think they will wander.  Great place for kids and adults!

Our boys absolutely LOVE this park!  There are train rides, old locomotive trains you can walk through and run around, a store with train memorabilia and little picnic areas for you to reserve for parties if you like, or just sit for a little picnic with your little ones.  I would highly recommend this place, but heads up, if your kids are super fans it is a hard place to leave!  Enjoy!

Another big winner, this train museum is free to enter, and you only need to pay if you want to enjoy the rides.  It was founded in 1952, and the train collection is extension, really awesome for boys that love Thomas the Train, and all the other trains out there!

LOVE this museum, would recommend calling in before to let them know you are coming!  This is really designed for children 8 and under, so what a great place to get out with your kids.  There are hands-on exhibits and family programs that you can explore with your family.  I think you will really love it.

I can’t say enough about the staff here, they are super nice and supportive, and VERY patient.  I would enroll in one of their programs just to get out of the house and hang with other moms & dads that are home all day with the kids.  There are so many things to go out and experience.

This place is great for a regular visit, events, programs, birthday rentals, groups and news about the community.  There are outdoor playgrounds where the kids can walk around streams and play along the Storyteller boards to paint and also ages 10 and under with their caregivers.

HAPPY EXPLORING! 😊
