There was a point in time where the echoes of a guitar hammered within the canyons of the Santa Monica mountains. As the falcons flew and the seagulls glided by, they were courted with the brilliant chords of some of the greatest music artists this side of the Mississippi. California, known for Hollywood stars and classy bars, had its fair share of talented musicians that gathered for the kumbaya of an authentic, chilling song that would be loved by all.

The issues were clear, however. No person could get famous without an edge and without a strong backbone. Agents would treat talent as pawns, Directors would work them to the bone, and the studios would milk them dry.

They were the old classic sense of Hollywood, where dreams were mostly destroyed for profit, and it still remains the same total.

Some know California as the land of the lost. The lost talented souls looking to be seen and heard. The lost looking for something they could only find within. And this brings me to the Laurel Canyon musicians that lived there in the 60’s and made it big, real big.

The Byrds sang ‘Hey Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,’ and lived in Laurel Canyon during the 60’s. Wikipedia notes that The original five-piece lineup of the band consisted of Jim McGuinn (lead guitar, vocals), Gene Clark (tambourine, vocals), David Crosby (rhythm guitar, vocals), Chris Hillman (bass guitar, vocals), and Michael Clarke (drums).

Frank Zappa whose life inspired many guitarists throughout the world, and here is a list of his top ten songs.

Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors, also lived in the canyon. Just check out all of his lyrics here, he really knew how to write a song.

There are so many others including Cass Elliot, Joni Mitchell, Buffalo Springfield, Carol King and more.

Netflix just came out with the documentary on all of the Laurel Canyon talent and stories that came from those mountains.

I watched it today and it was pretty revealing, edgy, and exciting.
