Namaste and Tashi Delek from the Himalayas!

We are on a mission to discover every different cuisine in California that inspires culinary excellence and unique spices that are delicious and nutritious worldwide!

It is our pleasure to share our culinary adventures with you as we travel and today we learned about Himalayan cuisine at the Himalaya restaurant in Ventura, California!

The Himalayan cuisine is like none other as it brings it influence from the top of the highest mountain peaks in the world.

Home to Mount Everest or Sagarmatha in Nepalese, the Himalayas have a majestic pull towards some of the greatest adventurous climbers in the world. It turns out that 8 of the highest mountain peaks in the world happen to land in Nepal.

This bravery spans lifetimes as some of the fittest explorers have tried to climb the mountain spans highest peaks, where the mystical Mount Everest is regarded as the highest mountain peak in the world.

In addition to holding the highest peak record worldwide, it also combines the adventurous, winning culinary spices of the Tibetan, Indian and Nepalese cultures.

Nepal is literally translated as the Abode of Snow. Nepal is a country in Asia separating the Indian subcontinent from the Tibetan Plateau.

These neighboring countries are engulfed in Buddhism.  It’s founder Buddha was born in Nepal. A Hindu king that renounced his throne, he became enlightened during his travels to India. He found enlightenment in India, and while living and dying there he perfected his spiritualism and Buddhism itself.

We were able to find those lovely Buddha statues out in Ventura County, California via the Himalaya restaurant itself, the restaurant that merges cuisine from the holy trinity of countries Nepal, India and Tibet.

Let’s get started with the food! Here are some Himalayan dishes that will impress you and your guests.

KATHMANDU CHILLI CHICKEN

A funky twist on Chinese Kung Pow Orange Chicken,  Kanthmandu Chilli Chicken is a kothay of green chili, bell peppers, onions and chicken in a homemade chili sauce. Spice level is entirely up to you as you can order it as kid friendly, mild, spicy, or fire spicy. We recommend spicy if you can handle the fire!

NAMCHE YAK CHILLI

Yakety yak, DON’T TALK BACK! If you remember that song, you are old like me. You may also enjoy this savory Yak based Tibetan beef chilli. Here they combine a thick base of meat, beans, and garam masala spices with tomatoes to spice up your life.

STEAMED MO:MO BITES

If you are familiar with potstickers, dumplings, gyoza, mandu, baozi, buzz, pinyin, and jiaozi, you’ll love these baby momo bites that are hot to order and scrumptious with every mouthwatering bite.

TAMARIND SPINACH SALAD

This salad features tamarind, the sweet fruit that is similar to a date that gives a stellar sweetness when paired with a balsamic vinaigrette that will keep you coming back for more.

LAMB SAYQUWA

This Himalayan spiced lamb is delectable and quite moist when cooked medium rare. We enjoyed the spices of salt, ginger, garlic, szechuan pepper, fenugreek seeds, cumin, cilantro, coriander, asafoetida, and green chillis.
